SHOWCASE

(Upper Ground Floor, 39 Yip Kan Street, Wong Chuk Hang)

The Southern District, stretching from Shek O in the east to Pok Fu Lam in the west, and reaching south to Ap Lei Chau, has long witnessed the city’s evolving industries. From the heyday of the fishing and shipbuilding to its transformation into an industrial centre, and through the ebb and flow of the typhoon shelters, the district's diverse characters are deeply etched into the daily lives of its people.
“Our Southerly Days” invites you on a journey through time, memory, and space, as seen through the eyes of artists who have lived, grown up, or worked in the Southern District. Through diverse artistic expressions and mediums, this project reconnects with the everyday life through three thematic lenses: Fishery (漁), Delight (愉), and Corner (隅).
Fishery (漁) — The emblem of Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau, celebrating the boat dwellers' culture that once defined this place.
Delight (愉) — The joyful, often hidden moments of growing up in familiar place that shaped the shared social memory.
Corner (隅) — The ever-changing street corners that reveal unexpected visual and emotional encounters.
We invite you to rediscover this vibrant community through a renewed lens — one that celebrates the aesthetics of everyday life rooted in place. Together, these perspectives unfold a multifaceted narrative of the Southern District.
Artists: Sarah Mui | Deep Food | LeonLollipop
All artworks from “Our Southerly Days” will be presented at SHOWCASE on 11 and 12 October, giving visitors an exclusive first look. The three thematic lenses: “Fishery”, “Delight”, and “Corner” will guide visitors to explore the district and reconnects with the everyday life.

For those who grew up in Ap Lei Chau, Aberdeen or Wong Chuk Hang, the Southern District is more than theme parks and floating seafood restaurants, it is a lively neighbourhood full of everyday adventures. In years when material comforts were few, children’s lives were brimmed with joy in the spaces between mountains, sea and streets.
Artist Sarah Mui’s roving art installation will be featured here, transforming the playful moments mapped by hills, sea and streets into a cart of toys, adding a touch of joyfulness to the community. The cart invites kaifongs to rediscover the neighbourhood’s unique games and joyful moments afresh.

LeonLollipop
LeonLollipop (a.k.a. Leon Lai) is a multifaceted creator known for his unique blend of painting and design, specialising in the portrayal of various animals. He is the original creator of the mural character “Gloomie the Cat.” After earning a master’s degree from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London, Leon quickly gained recognition, winning several prestigious awards. “Gloomie the Cat” reflects Leon’s contemplative views on life. With its flat face and seemingly helpless expression, Gloomie often conveys a sense of world-weariness, with which Leon captures the authenticity and depth of human experience.
Inspired by the seafaring traditions of the Southern District’s boat-dwelling community and the playful spirit of the classic television series “Telefishion”, “Sea of Colourful Memories” presents a selection of colourfully tinted dried seafood that carries authentic fisherfolk community stories within each element. Visitors can enjoy a dreamlike journey through multi-sensory experience, deepening their understanding of local seafaring life.
The installation by “Deep Food”, the creative collective, transforms traditional preserved seafood and collective memories into a contemporary visual language, reflecting on the shared stories and fishing heritage of the community. The team fosters cultural preservation and raises awareness of community identity in an innovative way.
