DESCRIPTION
Throughout their creative practice, the artist collective “Zaat Hap” has remained committed to traditional bamboo craft while incorporating the visual imagination of contemporary art. When bamboo and paper enter the Sai Wan community, how might these materials respond to local stories and collective memory? How can this medium carry neighbourhood narratives and generate new creative encounters?
In the first half of the session, the artist collective will unpack the stories behind the project — from the many community memories shared by master craftsmen and residents to the bamboo sourced in Sai Wan and used in the artwork.
In the second half, the collective will give a live demonstration of different traditional bamboo craft techniques, including the processes of splitting (po 破) and shaving (soek 削) bamboo into strips, as well as the basic techniques of framing (zaat 紮) and papering (pok 撲). Participants will also be invited to take part in simple hands-on exercises and experience the craft of bamboo for themselves.
ARTIST / PARTNER
Zaat Hap
“Zaat Hap” is an art collective founded by four artists — Emily Chan, Oscar Lau, Jeffrey Hung and Mimmy Tjia. Its members come from a range of fields, including urban studies, social design, communication design and contemporary art.
Driven by a shared interest in humanity, innovation and aesthetics, the collective engages in cross-disciplinary explorations of the traditional craft of bamboo and paper scaffolding. Through contemporary and plural perspectives, it seeks to deconstruct and reframe the modern significance of this traditional art form.
