DESCRIPTION
The waters around Tolo Harbour once served as an important habitat for various local corals. However, urban development has led to a drastic decline in the number of corals on the seabed. Participants will learn more about the installation “Coral Comes Ashore” by artist Ho Yuen-leung, and create inflatable coral installations to restore color to the bleached corals and recreate a vibrant marine landscape. Then, participants will embark on a journey to the waters of Sai Kung to witness the rare beauty of coral formations firsthand.
※ Pre-registration required.
ARTIST / PARTNER
Ho Yuen-leung
Ho Yuen-leung graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with major in sculpture. He enjoys gathering fallen tree trunks and branches, mostly from Acacia trees, to make sculptures. His creations are repeatedly refined, becoming increasingly narrow, elongated, delicate, and thin, almost unable to stand erect. In recent years, Ho has broadened his artistic work to encompass new forms and themes, including site-specific installations and environmental art to better express his creative ideas. He has a strong passion for nature and enjoys working outside while making his art.
The Coral Academy from the School of Life Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong
Coral Academy focuses on coral conservation, restoration, and public education. The Academy aims to enhance public awareness of Hong Kong's rich marine biodiversity and environmental issues, with a particular emphasis on coral communities. It fosters emotional connections between participants and local coral ecosystems through hands-on experiences like coral adoption, propagation, nursery maintenance, outplanting, and field monitoring. Additionally, the Academy promotes pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors, empowering participants to become champions of coral conservation.
