"Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang" Press Release

Embark on an in-depth arts and cultural journey through new art installations, handicraft workshops, heritage and community guided tours, and a self-guided tour goodie bag.

【HONG KONG, 27 August 2026】Presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), "Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang" will be held from 19 September to 31 October 2026.  Riding on the inaugural art walk "small valley TAI HANG" in 2023, "Revisit Tai Hang" invites members of the public and visitors to rediscover this small charming neighbourhood tucked away on the north shore of Hong Kong Island. "Revisit Tai Hang" presents new art installations, handicraft workshops, heritage and community guided tours, and self-guided experiences, inviting the public to wander through the neighbourhood’s streets and alleys, discover local artistic creations and experience the cultural warmth of the community.  All programmes are now available for public registration on Klook.  Places are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Transforming Traditional Stories through Art   Weaving the Character of Tai Hang

Tai Hang’s intersecting streets and alleys, century-long Fire Dragon tradition, historic architecture and everyday neighbourhood life form a distinctive rhythm of life.  Participating artists of the previous "small valley TAI HANG" are invited to return and explore the unique character of Tai Hang through new artistic creations.

Weaving artist Zoe Siu continues her creative journey from "small valley TAI HANG", presenting the classic Hakka fa dai blessing motif—the "Lum Chai" (an olive-shaped, diamond-shaped pattern) in the form of unconventional kites in the community. Her brand-new weaving artwork Weaving the Future connects the historical memories with community imagination.

Exploring Tai Hang through the Five Senses with Diverse Handicraft Experiences

Mixed media artist Max Cheng and paper-mache art collective Hira Hira will also return to Tai Hang to host handicraft workshops inspired by the neighbourhood’s culture and community stories:

i) Tai Hang Flavours Handmade Incense Workshop — Artist Max Cheng will lead participants to make natural handmade incense by using used tea leaves of Hong Kong-style milk tea from cha chaan tengs and coffee grounds from cafes, turning everyday neighbourhood scenes into olfactory memories to take home.
ii) Tai Hang Mythical Creature Paper Mache Workshop — Led by Hira Hira, participants will create their own guardian mythical creature inspired by stories of Tai Hang, bringing home a warm blessing and a sense of protection.
iii) Miniature Tai Hang Fire Dragon Crafting Workshop — Artist Felix Yiu will guide participants to create a mini fire dragon by combining traditional craft techniques with contemporary craft materials, offering a renewed understanding of Tai Hang’s century-old Fire Dragon Dance tradition and folk craftsmanship.

Uncovering the Past and Present of Tai Hang through Guided and Self-guided Tours

"Revisit Tai Hang" offers guided tours to introduce Tai Hang from the perspectives of architecture, community and cultural heritage:

i) Tai Hang Architectural and Heritage Guided Tour — Led by architectural researcher Dr Charles Lai, the tour focuses on Tai Hang’s diverse architectural landscape, from its early development as a Hakka village to the present day, exploring how historic buildings contribute to the integration between the old and new, as well as to the vitality of the community.
ii) Tai Hang Community and Cultural Heritage Guided Tour — Led by seasoned broadcaster Ms Audrey Yip, the tour will take participants to Lin Fa Temple, old village houses, unique local shops and eateries, recounting stories of Tai Hang’s transformation, Fire Dragon tradition, diverse communities and neighbourhood connections.

In addition to the guided tours, members of the public are welcome to purchase the "Self-guided Tour Goodie Bag", which includes artist-designed cultural and creative products, a self-guided map, and redemption vouchers from local shops.  Participants can explore Tai Hang at their own pace and experience the warmth of community through the streets and alleys.
