Through Its Streets and Alleys
【HONG KONG, 24 SEPTEMBER 2026】Presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), “Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang” officially commenced last weekend. Riding on the inaugural art walk “small valley TAI HANG” in 2023, “Revisit Tai Hang” brings together local artists to present new art installations, handicraft workshops, heritage and community guided tours, as well as self-guided experiences from 19 September to 31 October 2026. Members of the public and visitors are invited to rediscover this small neighbourhood tucked away on the north shore of Hong Kong Island through an artistic lens, experience its community spirit and uncover its local cultural stories. Activities are now available on Klook. Places are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Speaking at the kick-off ceremony yesterday, Mr Kenneth Fok, Chairman of HKADC, said, “ ‘Arts in the City’ has created opportunities for the industrialisation of arts and at the same time, echo the Government’s active promotion of cultural tourism through the principle of ‘shaping tourism with cultural activities and promoting culture through tourism’, thereby fostering a sustainable arts ecosystem. Through ‘Arts in the City’, we hope to connect artists with the community and brings arts into everyday life. We also hope to stimulate the local economy through the arts, encouraging participants to support local business while taking part in arts activities.”
Ms Bernice Yuen, Miss Hong Kong 2026, also attended in support of "Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang".
New Weaving Art Installations Weaving the Future Transforms Hakka Traditions
Weaving artist Zoe Siu has created a brand-new weaving artwork Weaving the Future for “Revisit Tai Hang”. Continuing her creative journey from “small valley TAI HANG” three years ago, Zoe Siu interprets the classic Hakka fa dai blessing motif—the “Lum Chai” (an olive-shaped, diamond-patterned motif) in the form of unconventional kites with contemporary lines. The installation is now on display in the Tai Hang community, extending the blessings from the past into the present and connecting the neighbourhood’s historical memories with community imagination.
Handicraft Workshops and Guided Tours Explore Tai Hang’s Culture and Community Stories
Last weekend (19 and 20 September), a series of handicraft workshops and guided tour focusing on Tai Hang’s culture and community stories was held. Through different artistic media and cultural perspectives, participants were invited to rediscover the neighbourhood’s streetscape and historical tales.
- Tai Hang Flavours Handmade Incense Workshop — Artist Max Cheng leads participants to create natural handmade incense using used tea leaves of Hong Kong-style milk tea from a Tai Hang cha chaan teng and coffee grounds from a speciality cafe, preserving everyday neighbourhood scents into olfactory memories to take home.
- Tai Hang Mythical Creature Paper Mache Workshop — Hira Hira leads participants to craft a guardian creature inspired by Tai Hang’s stories, the “Sulphur Night Fire Dragon”, bringing home a warm blessing and sense of protection.
- Miniature Tai Hang Fire Dragon Crafting Workshop—Artist Felix Yiu combines traditional craft techniques with contemporary craft materials, guiding participants to create a mini fire dragon, offering a fresh way to learn about Tai Hang’s century-old Fire Dragon Dance tradition and the related folk craftsmanship.
- Tai Hang Architectural and Heritage Guided Tour — Led by architectural researcher Dr Charles Lai, participants journey through old and new buildings in Tai Hang, including early Hakka village houses, pre-war tenement buildings and Lai Tak Tsuen, tracing the transformation of the times through every brick and tile.
The Tai Hang Community and Cultural Heritage Guided Tour, led by seasoned broadcaster Audrey Yip, will take place in October. The tour will guide participants to visit Lin Fa Temple, old village houses, unique local shops and eateries, while sharing stories of Tai Hang’s century-long transformation, the Fire Dragon traditions, its diverse communities and neighbourhood bonds. Workshops and guided tours will continue to be held over four consecutive weekends in October, offering a diverse range of artistic and culture experiences.
