Seeds Lab x Monti Lai Wai-yi: Paddy-Go-Home

02 Mar, 2024

“ Many people find it hard to imagine today’s Hong Kong as the “land of fish and rice.” However, like this place, many farmers are still sowing seeds for this city. ”

Vis-a-vise the mainstream impression that agriculture sees no future, the founders of Seeds Lab started farming in their prime. Labouriously, gently and determinedly, they cultivate self-sustainability. Now, they sow experimental seeds: when little monsters stomp barefoot in the mud, the paddies get ready for the next growing season; when green sprouts grow into a golden harvest, we learn that food does not come from supermarkets but our land.

Observing from the side, farmer-artist Monti Lai Wai-yi leads participants to look for nourishment under Kai Kung Leng for a city-wide rice field.

Under Kai Kung Leng ("Rooster Ridge"), thanks to the wholehearted facilitation of farmer-artist Monti Lai Wai-yi and the other helpers, over two hundred "roaster bowls" have carried paddy fields to homes in different parts of Hong Kong!

Children and grown-ups who brought home the paddy fields also drew beautiful moments at Seeds Lab on little ceramic mountains. Will this citywide rice growing experiment result in a big harvest?

“ Growing plants is not only about harvesting. It is also about what you observe throughout the plant's life. This exchange is life-enriching. ”  ——Monti Lai Wai-yi
